On April 26, 2013, construction began on the world's largest solar project, Antelope Valley Solar. In January 2013, Warren Buffett’s energy development company, MidAmerican Solar, purchased 5,400 acres of land for $2.5 billion straddling the Kern and Los Angeles county line. The project is expected to complete by the end of 2015 with the capacity to generate 579 megawatts (MW) of power. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) 579 MW will power an average of 125,000 California homes.
A solar energy facility of this magnitude is expected to benefit the Antelope Valley by providing 650 construction jobs and adding and estimated $500 million worth of economic impact to the region. Calculations provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency show that the solar plant is expected to displace more than 775,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year. In just 20 years, that will be equivalent to removing 3 million cars off the road.
