California Governor Jerry Brown announced yesterday that electric car and bus manufacturer BYD would open the first Chinese-owned automobile factory in the USA in Lancaster, CA. BYD is the largest supplier of rechargeable batteries in the world. BYD plans to leverage their market position and long standing leadership in the rechargeable battery industry to solidify themselves as a market leader in electric automobile manufacturing. BYD opened their automotive U.S. headquarters in downtown Los Angeles in October 2011. On March 25th, 2013, the city of Long Beach awarded a $12.1 million contract to purchase 10 all-electric buses and charging equipment to BYD.
